It was beginning to look as if I was about to make a success of something, but within a few weeks the war effort had taken precedence over everything else. Hence, for some 55 years, my wife and our descendants have endured, patiently or otherwise, the frequent use of it. The phrase is almost always used to draw attention to special virtues, sufferings or achievements of the narrator. For some unexplainable reason, I have not resented the remark to the extent of vowing never to bore my children or family with such egotistical chatter.
